Create an IRS collection deadline checklist

Organize notice dates, response instructions and proof of action when an IRS collection letter arrives.

A deadline checklist is a tool for keeping instructions visible. It cannot tell you which legal right applies; use the actual notice and qualified advice for that determination.

Record the document precisely

Write the complete notice title, notice number, issue date, tax period, and every response date shown. Photograph or scan all pages for your private records. Note the date you received it without replacing the printed response date with an assumption.

The IRS advises responding by the due date when a response is required. The correct response depends on what the letter says and whether you agree. Understand an IRS notice or letter ↗

Assign an owner to each action

  • Who reviews the notice and account records?
  • Who prepares the response or request?
  • Who signs any required document?
  • Who submits it through the correct route?
  • Who keeps proof and confirms follow-up?

If you engage a professional, make this division explicit. “They are working on it” is not a useful task status. Ask what is being submitted, by whom, and when you will receive a copy or confirmation.

Set an earlier personal reminder to gather records. Leave time for missing information or signature questions rather than planning to begin on the final day.

Keep urgency in proportion to the notice

If a letter concerns a final intent to levy or a hearing right, get timely qualified help and follow the notice instructions. The IRS levy guidance emphasizes contacting it promptly for a final levy notice. IRS levy guidance ↗

Republic Tax is the separate paid provider reached by the number on this site. An intake call, document upload, or signed engagement does not itself establish that a deadline has been met. Ask for confirmation of the actual action.

After responding, keep the issue on your list until you understand the next instruction. Save the record of submission with the original notice so the sequence remains easy to verify.

Three questions to take with you

  • What response does this exact letter require?
  • Who is responsible for submitting it?
  • What proof of completion will I receive?
